National Theatre of Scotland creates theatre that sparks joy, entertainment, education, empathy and connection in order to make a positive impact for Scottish society. The company travels throughout Scotland and the world to bring their performances to people who might otherwise have difficulty accessing such high quality cultural entertainment.
In 2023, Bently Foundation awarded National Theatre of Scotland with a £100,000 grant to support their flagship production of "Dracula: Mina's Reckoning." The radical new adaptation of Bram Stoker's classic tells the tale of the famous vampire from the perspective of Mina Murray, who shares her encounter with other patients in a hospital setting. Morna Pearson wrote and co-created this re-telling with director Sally Cookson and an all female or non-binary cast of eight actors.
NTS traveled to eight different cities throughout the UK with a focus on sustainability in all aspects of their production. They train their staff on carbon literacy, upcycle sets, costumes and lights from previous plays, optimize travel to minimize emissions, and use biodegradable, eco-friendly materials for new props whenever possible.
